Dutch Defence – Chess Defence for Black

The Dutch Defence is seldom played at top-level chess events because the move 1…f5 has drawbacks. It weakens the black kingside and does not develop a piece. The move f5 aims to control e4. Black usually attacks at the kingside and White at the queenside.

Stonewall Variation (Modern Stonewall (Bd6))
This is a solid defense and Black is unlikely to lose through a kingside attack. The pawn structure has a blocked character and it is adviseble for Black to trade his bad bishop at c8 as his pawns d5,e6,c6,f5 are placed on white squares and this limits the bishops potential. Black can get rid of the bishop by developing it to h5 playing it to d7,e8,h5 and then trade it for a knight.

Staunton Gambit
White sacrifices a pawn to exploit the weakened black kingside. This gambit is not very
convincing and is not played at top level chess.
