Wasted Tempi

In chess we call a move, a tempi. A tempi is a time unit. If you waste tempis, you lose the game. It is as simple as that. Of course, if you play against a weak player this may not happen as he is unable to punish you for wasting time.

But if you play versus a club player then you have no chance to make up for your time-wasting moves. He will just run you over as you can see in the game below.

Black just lost two tempis only and he gets overrun…Move 8 (8…h6?) and Move 9 (9…Bd6 – the bishop has moved already so why moving it again?)
