The Petroff Defence is also called the Russian Game. It was invented by Alexander Petrov, a strong Russian chess master of the mid-19th century who lived in Saint Petersburg. In 1809, he defeated Kopev and Baranov, Petersburg’s leading chess players, and became Russias best player at the age of 15.
In this defence Black does not protect his e-pawn playing 2....Nc6 but attacks the white e-pawn instead playing 2....Nf6.
This is a very solid opening for Black and the game often ends in a draw.
